About Department of Forensic Medicine & Toxicology

 

Forensic Medicine is Medical Specialty which deals with the application of medical knowledge in administration of justice. The broad goal of teaching of undergraduate/ post graduate students in forensic medicine is to produce a physician who is well informed about medico-legal responsibilities in practice of medicine. He/ She will also be capable of making observation and inferring conclusions by logical deductions to set enquiries on the right track in criminal matters and connected medico-legal problems. Acquires knowledge of law in relation to medical practice, medical negligence and respect for codes of medical ethics.

Vision: To gain excellence and integrity in Forensic Medicine by balancing the emphasis on teaching, research, and medico-legal services and develop a model center of excellence in the field of forensic pathology and allied branches of forensic science.

Mission: Our mission is to produce the physician capable of providing medical-legal service without infringing medical ethics and principles and also provide the comprehensive medicolegal service to the community through innovative programs.
Services: Department is aiming to conduct various workshops for registered medical practitioners to prevent medical negligence and also allegations of medical negligence. Department is also aiming to conduct induction training of medical officers of public health department which will improve the quality of medico legal work and medico legal reports at the remote periphery. Similarly, Department is aiming to conduct various workshops for public prosecutors and police officials to help them to present the case before the Honourable court which may help to impart justice.
Education: The department is involved in multifarious activities like teaching, training, and research. The faculty members of the department are providing valuable contribution as member of different institute committees and administrative as well as academic bodies. The department is providing clinical forensic medicine service, post-mortem examination service and dignified management of dead bodies during COVID-19 pandemic. Apart from these activities, the department provides valuable opinion in medico-legal issues referred to it by the medical board, different investigating authorities, human-right commission, and Honourable courts.

Research and Events:

Facilities: Forensic Medicine department at GMCH, Gondia must cater bulk of medico-legal work including post-mortem and ante-mortem work. The cases of medico-legal work of entire Gondia jurisdiction area are brought to our department. The department has to provide medico-legal opinions in cases referred from adjoining districts of Maharashtra, Madhya-Pradesh and Chhattisgarh. Department of Forensic Medicine, Government Medical College, Gondia is also involved in undergraduate teaching of second and third MBBS students implementing CBME along with the curriculum and also postgraduate teaching. The post-graduation course started in the year 2022 with maximum capacity of 3 students per year. In 2022, two post-graduate students and in 2023, three post-graduate students joined. All the medicolegal reports, antemortem reports, death certificate, form 4, form 8, and different viscera forms are issued in computerised format. Medicolegal autopsies of more than 500 are conducted in each year. Department has dedicated department library, department museum and a new mortuary complex constructed in 2020 with facility of doctor’s room, attendant’s room and store room. Administrative block of the department is on first block of KTS OPD complex consisting of the office, record section, rooms for faculties and non-teaching staff and seminar room.
